PROGRAM OUTCOMES

 Students will:

 -Love the school and public libraries.

 -Be able to use the library and its resources in a courteous and responsible manner.

 -Be able to listen with skill for a wide variety or purposes.

 -Be able to locate materials in all sections of the library.

 -Be able to identify all parts of a book.

 -Be able to use the Dewey Decimal System and automated card catalog to locate library materials.

 -Be able to properly use library terminology.

 -Be able to use the library’s reference tools.

 -Be able to properly conduct research and document research sources.

 -Be able to use, effectively, the library related computer programs and online services.

CURRICULUM OUTCOMES - GRADES K-4

 STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

1.  Use the school and public libraries and their resources in a courteous and responsible manner.

A.  Check out library materials following established library media procedures.

B.  Handle library materials properly and return them in a timely manner.

C.  Behave in an appropriate manner when in the library.

 

2.  Listen with skill for a wide variety of purpose.

          A. Follow directions.

          B. Listen to and interpret stories.

          C. Appreciate and discuss literature.

 

3.  Locate materials in all sections of the library.

A.  Differentiate between fiction and non-fiction.

B.  Locate picture, fiction, and non-fiction books by call numbers.

 

4.  Identify all parts of a book.

A.  Identify the cover, spine, spine label, book pocket, book card and book codes on a book.

B.  Identify title page and title page elements.

C.  Locate and use table of contents, chapters, index and glossary.

 

5.  Use the Dewey Decimal System and card catalog to locate library materials.

A. Understand the purpose of the card catalog.

B. Understand the difference between the traditional and electronic catalog.

C. Locate non-fiction materials using the Dewey Decimal system.

 

6.  Use library terminology.

A.  Properly use general library media center terms.

B.  Correctly use publication terms.

 

7.  Use the library’s reference tools.

A.  Identify and use dictionaries.

B.  Identify and use encyclopedias.

C.  Identify and use atlases.

D.  Identify and use almanacs.

 

8.  Use, effectively, the library related computer programs and online services.

A.  Use network and individual CD-ROM programs.

C.  Recognize and explain the function of a preface, forward, dedication and introduction to a work.

 

5.  Use the Dewey Decimal System and the card catalog to locate library materials.

A.  Use the traditional and electronic catalogs.

B.  Locate non-fiction materials using the Dewey Decimal System.

C.  Understand the purpose and arrangement of the card catalog.

D.  Identify and use the types of catalog cards and the information on them – author, title, call number and annotation.

 

6.  Properly use library terminology.
